Consequence Music

Consequence Music ist das Debutalbum von Dextro, dem 27-jährigen Glasgower Ewan McKenzie. „Dextro is a Latin word that literally means ‚right hand side‘, and has connotations relating to being sly and skilful,“ sagt er zur Namensfindung. „I don’t profess to being sly and skilful, but I like the idea of the word suggesting the idea of the ‚right side‘, the good side.“

Ohne Zweifel gibt es eine undurchdringlich positive Seele in MacKenzies größtenteils instrumentaler Musik. Diese lässt sich als wunderschön strukturierte, hoch melodiöse und vielschichtige Electronica bezeichnen, die, obwohl sie sich vor ihren großen Helden – Brian Eno, Neu und Phillip Glass – verneigt, stets ihren eigenen Charakter wahrt.

Ein Schlüsselelement in MacKenzies Sound ist das Einbinden von Soundscape Flächen in seine üppigen Kompositionen. Auf dem Opener „Bladder Wrack“ findet man Mitschnitte von hektischen japanischen Straßen, auf ‚Calcutec‘ gibt ein Tintendrucker den Takt an. Es scheint, als ob keine Geräschquelle zu klein oder zu groß sei, um sie in das komplexe und athmosphärische Klanggebilde ein zu binden. „The strangest place I have ever recorded? Hmmm, well there was this industrial mill in Ireland which had a series of belts that created a drone, the noise almost resembled a note.“

Ewan, der aus dem schottischen Falkirk stammt, fing mit 14 Jahren an, in Bands zu spielen. Momentan spielt er Schlagzeug bei der Glasgower Experimental Rock Band Snowblood, die 2005 ihr zweites Album „Being and Becoming“ veröffentlichten und seit 2002 jedes Jahr auf Tour waren. Die Idee zu Dextro entsprang MacKenzies Wunsch, seine eigene Sounds zu erschaffen und außerhalb eines Band Kontextes zu musizieren und führte so zu den ungewöhnlichen Sounds, die auf dem Album zu hören sind: „My first set up was a very basic one, using an Atari ST and a sampler,“ erzählt er. „I would try to record piano and drums as well as sounds from everyday life. There after I would play with the sounds as much as possible until I came across sounds that appealed to me. I gave the recordings to friends and they encouraged me to do more.“

Wenn er live spielt, hören wir nie zweimal das Selbe. So gelingt es ihm, seine Musik stets interessant und überraschend zu halten.

Die erste Dextro Veröffentlichung, die „Animism EP“ erschien 2004 bei Jumblefunk, noch im selben Jahr folgte die 12″ „Do you need help“ bei James Holdens Border Community Label. Danach begann MacKenzie an „Consequence Music“ zu arbeiten. Er verbrachte ein halbes Jahr in Einsamkeit, um das Album auf zu nehmen: „Most of album was created in a very quiet house in the gorgeous Scottish hills. Solitude played a big part in getting my mind focussed on the music, and over this six to seventh month period I didn’t socialise with my friends except on rare occasions (which were always fantastic fun).“

Consequence Music entstand aus Ideen, an denen MacKenzie schon seit Jahren herumbastelte. Getreu seinem Credo („music should move you and sometimes overwhelm you,“) hat er ein Album mit großer Wirkung erschaffen, das weit außerhalb der gewöhnlichen Electronica Hörerschaft Fans finden wird.

„As I was making the album, I tried my best to enjoy the music as much as any listener would. I was sure that I wanted to do an album, and I am sure I will make another one when the time is right.“
