Sol Seppy
Unlike most other albums, Sol Seppy's debut album The Bells of 1 2 did not feature many different musicians - there is just one person behind the work: Sophie Michalitsianos.
All of the pieces on the album were written and arranged by the multi-talented Michalitsianos over the last two years. Sophie received a classical music education in piano and cello - but that's not all of her musical roots. Born in England, she spent much of her childhood in England and Australia, but also lived in Greece and other European countries.
The passionate musician began writing songs at the age of five: "We had barely settled down in one place when it was time to move on. My only real constant was music." Music gave her a sense of security during this time.
At 16, Sophie began writing music for TV documentaries and trading vocal recordings for studio time at EMI Studios in Australia. In the years that followed, various record companies offered her deals, but they all aimed to market her with the image of a harmless pop singer. "I politely turned down all offers and instead continued on my own musical path."
Sophie begins university studies, but soon swaps her original subjects for music and studies composition and orchestra at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Shortly afterwards, she makes a name for herself as Australia's "improvising rock cellist" and tours with numerous well-known acts. After a short time, however, the artist decides to look for a new challenge.
So, at the age of 23, she moved to the USA, where shortly after her arrival, Mark Linkous from Sparklehorse noticed her and offered Sophie the opportunity to come with Sparklehorse on their tour with Radiohead. After the successful tour, Sophie worked on two Sparklehorse albums, Good Morning Spider and It's A Wonderful Life.
After her time with Sparklehorse and various musical projects, Sophie founded her own recording studio in New York: "The luxury of being able to work in my own studio was great. But I didn't have a sound engineer at my side and so I destroyed everything I created in terms of music. To my dismay, my beloved music became a huge negative reflection. Hardly any songs survived this phase - the studio was like a war zone."
But one night, when Sophie was out, her studio exploded. Nothing of the equipment, the house or the song material remained. Sophie seized the opportunity to start over, moved, and began to painstakingly build a new studio while redefining and developing herself.
"I can't imagine having released an album before this momentous event," says Sophie, who sees the explosion as a catalyst for the debut album. The talented artist behind Sol Seppy not only fulfills the roles of songwriter and performer on this album: Aside from the mixing of the songs by Paul Antonell, she is also the sound engineer and producer of The Bells of 1 2.
Sol Seppy's songs are like tunnels to eerie and unknown territories. Each song offers plenty of opportunity to get lost in them... Slo Fuzz's sad chorus makes everyone want to fly away. Wonderland tells the story of an artist who feels like change isn't going to happen. Come Running is a strange ode to camaraderie. Enter 2 Human captivates with a heartbreaking and nostalgic mood...
This enchanting album has finally come to fruition thanks to Sophie's extraordinary musical vision. The greatest influence of her musically unique work is "the discovery of beauty as a source of my inspiration."
