BODIES
Last autumn, Kat Frankie surprised, amazed, moved to tears and thrilled audiences with her project BODIES. On her tour, she sold out the Elbphilharmonie and the Berlin Philharmonie, among others. The show with her a cappella ensemble enraptured the audience with standing ovations.
The foundations for BODIES were laid some time ago. Kat Frankie had been integrating a cappella songs into her solo show for some time, sometimes performed by herself with the Loop Station, sometimes as a cappella pieces where her band did without their instruments and took over the harmony singing.
The project has now developed a life of its own. The sound of BODIES is indeed very special: without any instruments on stage, the eight-person ensemble delivers an astonishing range of human emotions. Sometimes incredibly powerful, sometimes tender and thoughtful, Frankie's compositions range from passionate to playful. And then of course there is the sheer physical power of eight female voices in harmony.
On BODIES' upcoming album, Frankie explores the possibilities of polyphonic singing even further. While some songs will already be familiar to audiences, new works such as "Wonder" and "Petrichor" are pure a cappella compositions. Frankie has dispensed with a lead vocal to instead focus on rich harmonies and creating a cozy warmth. Kat Frankie's vocals on "All of It" are also minimalist, but they sparkle with yearning and rise above the mantra-like background of the ensemble. "Joan Didion" is - it is important to note - not about the author, but about the alienation and grief of its protagonist. The epic "Versailles" is inspired by the story of the Women's March on Versailles in 1789, a protest by Parisian market women who were angry about the lack of bread. Eventually, thousands of people joined the women and this resulted in one of the most significant events of the French Revolution.
The ensemble consists of Frankie with Albertine Sarges, Barbara Greshake, Erika Emerson, Fama M'Boup, Liza Wolowicz, Tara Nome Doyle and Trinidad Doherty. To quote Frankie: "Part of what makes BODIES so powerful in my opinion is that every singer on stage is a talented solo artist in their own right. They all know how to put on a show and bring that power to the stage. I'm not so interested in creating the homogenous sound you normally expect from a choir: to get the best out of everyone there has to be room for individuality and I hope we've managed to create some kind of community feeling through that idea."
