Freeland
Chairman and Marine Parade founder Adam Freeland - signed to UK label Marine Parade - has long since launched his assault on the UK with his blistering productions and thought-provoking content. His debut single had capitalists choking on their lattes, consumers questioning their McBurgers, and storming the UK charts and every UK radio playlist at the same time. Adam, Marine Parade and Greenland are now preparing to take the rebellion to Europe. Of course, "Skywalking to everything meeting..."
The dancefloor is a wonderful place and there are few people more aware of this than DJ, producer and 'man about Brighton', Adam Freeland. But music is so much more than that. Adam Freeland is so much more than that. "Although my roots are on the dancefloor, it's a relief to express my influences beyond that. The idea of producing twelve breakbeat tunes and calling it an 'album' seemed as appealing as a kick in the balls," says Adam.
He means business. Free*Land is not a band with double CDs full of seamless and soulless mixes. Free*Land is a living, breathing band. They have already played some amazingly forward-thinking live shows. Their debut gig at London's Cargo was packed with lights, projections, ear-tickling sound tricks and talking robot heads and is already being touted as one of the gigs of 2003. Free*Land is not a side project 'box office scam', Free*Land is the real deal.
So who are Free*Land? Well, basically they are two crazy Chileans, a bald magic drummer, a soul diva and a DJ.
On guitar: Antonio. A Chilean who fled Pinochet's regime and later became a master of linguistics, political activist and guitar virtuoso. On bass: Carlos, Tone's cousin. A board-freak reggae guy who recently returned from LA where he was signed by Fred Durst.
On drums: Jim Carmichael. Has played for almost every major band to come out of Brighton in recent years. He is so convincing that Free*Land's own manager at the debut gig refused to believe that all the beats were played live. Vocals: Alison David. This stunning diva met Adam by chance on a bench outside his house. Alison has the soul of Shirley Bassey and the raw funk of Bette Davis. Vocals: Martin Fishely. Horace Andy protégé, former Pressure Drop collaborator and really quite outstanding.
"It's about the destructive side of consumer culture," says Adam. "About how we are fed meaningless nonsense that distracts us from the really important issues. It's the first time I've ever tried writing, but it's an area I've had a keen interest in. Bill Hicks has long been a great role model for me; he was both damn funny and exposed the deceptive illusion that surrounds us in a very accurate way.
It was worth playing this record in the US," Adam continued. "I always assumed that many people weren't that interested in my music, but even children came up to me and said, 'You have no idea how good it is to hear such a message right now.'"
The highlight of the album is the track “Supernatural Thing” featuring Alison David's unique voice. “It's a love song,” emphasises Adam. Simple but true, while naked fear drives the track “Mind Killer”. Inspired by the line “Fear is the Mind Killer” in Frank Herbert's 'Dune', the song is about overcoming fear; “a media-induced numbing moment of deep unconsciousness.” “It's scary, hard,” clarifies Adam, “it's about 'letting go'. We live in a society where fear is used as a tool of oppression; be it terrorism, SARS, paedophilia and we are becoming less and less aware of it.”
