Mulay
Mulay, the Berlin-based alternative/R&B singer, songwriter and producer, creates art that goes far beyond music. For her, music is not just sound, but a holistic, emotional journey that is closely interwoven with visual impressions. That's why Mulay brings her songs to life through images, films and performance. In doing so, she creates worlds in which her thoughts and ambivalent feelings become tangible by translating intimate emotions into powerful audiovisual experiences. Her art is not just about listening - it is an immersion in her vision that touches, reflects and invites empathy.

But Mulay's creativity does not end in the studio. For her, live performance plays a central role, in which she merges music and movement. Her performances are characterized by well-thought-out choreographies and close collaboration with designers,Art directors and dancers from the creative community with which she is closely connected.
This interdisciplinary approach is also reflected in their debut albumLAVENDER, which will be released on November 22, 2024 by Grönland. On September 12, 2024, the album was staged as an emergent dance performance in Studio DB as part of the Berlin Art Week.
The debut album, eagerly awaited by fans, takes the listener deep into the painful depths of toxic love. In twelve artfully intimate songs, Mulay processes personal experiences and shows thatLAVENDERgoes far beyond a classic Heartbreak album."It's about getting over that love and finding yourself along the way“, explains Mulay. This album is a powerful plea for healing, self-discovery and empowerment and acts as a ray of light in dark times.
Strength through vulnerability –That is the mantra of this record.
The previous EPs defined the path of the interdisciplinary combination of sound, singing, visuals and performance. But withLAVENDERMulay goes one step further. It reflects a deeper, therapeutic confrontation with her emotions, in which she emancipates herself from pent-up feelings and creates space for her anger - an anger that is often not allowed to women in this society.
With her soulful vocals and brutal honesty, Mulay draws listeners into her thoughts and feelings of the past few years. What was originally planned as a single and later as an EP turned into a creative flow that ultimately led to a full album. "It's not the debut album I had planned, but it's the album I had to make“, says Mulay about her journey as a person and a musician.
It was particularly important to her not to dwell on vague metaphors, but to honestly pour her innermost fears and longings into the lyrics. The project allowed me to speak my truth uncompromisingly and free myself from all the pain and disappointment“, she explains further. InLAVENDERToxic behavior is clearly identified without hesitation – no more restraint, no more time for harmony.
The journey throughLAVENDERbegins with the track “Ghosting You", which addresses the painful reality of ghosting as a form of self-protection. Mulay describes the agonizing moment of turning away from someone you hold deep in your heart but who is not good for you. "I can't be exposed to you, because I'd wanna be close to you“ she sings urgently.
In "White Room" she explores the emotional delirium after a breakup. The song addresses the feeling of isolation in an inner withdrawal in which one's own thoughts circle chaotically with no way out. "Toxic love can really feel like a drug addiction and cause very real physical withdrawal symptoms“, explains Mulay.
With "Kill The Lonely“ she takes a decisive step forward. Here she looks deep into her inner self and reveals what it means to be vulnerable. The song becomes a dialogue with herself: “What do I really feel?“ The answer is both human and vulnerable: “I just wanna be hero, you know / And I know it's irrational / And I know that it's human tho.”
The songs were created between Paris, London and Berlin, in collaboration with old companions such asLlucidandNovaaas well as new creative partners such as the French producer and multi-instrumentalistElie ZylbermanandJules MinckMulay moves fluidly between innovative songwriting and ambitious productions that create kaleidoscopic soundscapes full of soulful R&B, hip hop and electronica. She transforms pain and anger into feverishly charged, infectious soundscapes in which slow, downtempo moments and danceable beats merge into an emotional rush.
At the end of the process, Mulay transforms the negative experiences thatLAVENDERinto something radiant. This transformation is beautifully expressed in the song title “Tears Into Diamonds“. On the second half of the album, the themes change from injury to strength and resilience. An expression of her new-found self-confidence is the track “Half Human Half Dragon“, which delights with a playful alternation between singing and rap.
For Mulay, the end of the album is a certainty: “It is time to free yourself from the need to be chosen and finally choose yourself."
WithLAVENDERA new era is dawning – an era characterized by new freedom and the courageous promise to stand up for oneself and shine in one’s own light.
